Social Networking - The Benefits of Social Networking

For years, it was an accepted belief that, "it's not what you know, it's who you know" was the way to excel. But with the advent of the internet and, more specifically social networking websites, your ability to reach your target market is almost limitless. Social networking allows you to reach a global market and significantly increases your chances of success. While social networking can be beneficial, it's important to focus your social networking on your target market. I love writing and reading the writings of others, so I network my writings on blogs, forums, and websites for writers. My networking has allowed me to interact with fellow authors and publishers as well as receive valuable reviews on my writings. But joining the online social network is the easy part. Once you join, you have to stay actively involved in discussions in order to establish yourself as someone that is willing to learn as well as teach.

Online social networking is an investment in your future, and with any investment, it will take time for you to see the "fruits of your labor." Many people join blogs and forums and leave one line comments and sit back and wait for the members to come to you. It doesn't work that way. In order to be considered as credible, you have to leave quality comments and suggestion. If asked to review someone's writing or provide your thoughts on another member's idea, don't just say "it's good". Get into the weeds and tell the member why you think it's good. When you expound on your comments, it may spark thoughts in other members as well. There is more to gain by all parties when you do.

The next thing you should do is share your thoughts. Don't be afraid to put your ideas out there, no matter how farfetched you may think they are. Members of blogs and forums, for the most part, are very respectful of each others work or ideas. Putting you ideas out there for all the members to see will get you some valuable comments and suggestions and will also help you establish some credibility. In time, you will become the "go to" person which could increase your sales or get your ideas noticed.

Lastly, you should focus on becoming a resource to others. If all you're doing is asking for help, people may eventually avoid you because you're not bringing anything "to the table". You may be a novice and do not have the skills or knowledge to offer much, but everyone has something to offer. I like writing, and while I don't have the experience that others have, I like to make myself available for article or book reviews. Reviewing will allow you to expand your knowledge as well as establish a relationship with others in your profession. Make the most out of online social networking and I am confident your efforts will pay off.
